💎 Minecraft Chaos Cubed: The Sulfur Update for Android, Explained
If you play Minecraft Bedrock on Android and you keep hearing about “sulfur,” here’s the short version: it all comes from Chaos Cubed, the game drop that arrived in Bedrock Edition 26.30 (and Java Edition 26.2) on June 16, 2026. Everything since then — including the small 26.31 through 26.35 hotfixes and the 26.40 update — is built on top of it.
This is the update that turned the underground into a physics playground. Best of all, it’s a free update. If you already own Minecraft, you just update the app from Google Play and you’re in. There’s nothing to buy.
What version am I actually looking for?
Since 2026, Minecraft numbers its versions by year, so everything this year starts with “26.” The sulfur content is 26.30. Later builds (26.31, 26.32, 26.33, 26.34, 26.35) are hotfixes that fix bugs but don’t add new content, and 26.40, released August 4, 2026, adds new features on top of bug fixes. On Android you want 26.40 or newer — that way you get all the sulfur features plus the latest fixes and the new experimental features from this year’s third drop.
The Headline: Sulfur Caves
Chaos Cubed adds a brand-new underground biome called the sulfur caves. It generates at roughly the same depth as lush and dripstone caves, but it’s smaller and more broken up, tucked inside hills and mountains rather than under oceans or high peaks.
You don’t have to dig blind to find one. On the surface, keep an eye out for sulfur springs — bright, bubbling pools that act as a visual marker for a sulfur cave sitting somewhere below. Spot a spring, dig down, and you’ll usually find the biome underneath.
Inside, the caves are full of color: yellow sulfur blocks, red cinnabar blocks, jagged sulfur spikes, and the star of the show — the sulfur cube.
The Sulfur Cube: A Mob That Changes Its Own Physics
The sulfur cube is a passive, block-eating mob, and it’s the most creative thing in the update. Instead of behaving one fixed way, it absorbs a block and takes on that block’s physical personality. Feed it different blocks and it can turn bouncy, slippery, heavy, sticky, explosive, hot, or floaty.
You can push it, punch it, leash it, shear it, or even scoop it into a bucket to carry it around. That opens the door to homemade contraptions and mini-games — bounce pads, slippery slides, explosive traps — that feel like Minecraft suddenly discovered toy physics.
Dispensers can now load a block into a cube, and shears can pull a block back out, so you can reprogram your cube on the fly.

26.40 (August 4, 2026) — the biggest update since Chaos Cubed
After a string of quiet hotfixes, 26.40 is the first update since June to bring genuinely new content and features. It’s available broadly, though according to reports it wasn’t yet available on Nintendo Switch 2 at launch. The highlights:
Cloud storage on Windows. Worlds are automatically synced to the cloud during saving and can be downloaded on any device. Each account gets 4GB of storage.
A new accessibility option. A screen distortion control to reduce visual effects from the Nausea status effect and Nether portal transitions — aimed at players sensitive to those effects.
First experimental look at 2026’s third drop (Dappled Forest). With experimental features turned on, you can now test content from the upcoming drop, including:
- Abandoned Camp — a new structure that generates across 18 biome variants, with biome-specific designs, chests, barrels, and loot, plus Straw Beds and procedurally placed trees.
- Dappled Forest — a new forest biome near cold regions with poplar trees, Shelf Mushrooms, and Red Shrubs, plus cold-climate variants of passive mobs.
- Poplar trees — three color variants (red, orange, yellow) with matching leaves, saplings, and logs, each with its own falling-leaf particles.
- Red Shrub — a decorative plant block that grows in patches; composters accept it, and Bone Meal expands it into adjacent spaces.
- Shelf Mushroom — grows on poplar trees in small and large sizes; the large size drops two items when broken.
- Cushion — a placeable sitting block, craftable in 16 colors using wool slabs. Can’t move and doesn’t collide with other cushions.
- Straw Bed — a single-use sleeping block that’s destroyed after use; doesn’t work in the Nether or the End.
A big batch of bug fixes, organized by category: accessibility (improved narration, closed captions for the sweet berry bush), biomes (water fog in sulfur caves now renders bluer, to match Java Edition), blocks (fixed ghost blocks created by crouch-releasing on interactive blocks; potent sulfur now erupts through liquids), items (mobs released from a bucket no longer retain previous states or damage; boat durability dropped from 40 to 4 HP for Java Edition parity, but boats now regenerate damage on their own), mobs (sulfur cube tweaks to block-absorption distance, freeze prevention, and damage interactions), Realms (a Realm-deletion button, and the Hub is now reachable from the pause menu), and sound (fixes for shulker, pillager, and panda audio, plus dedicated sounds for sulfur spikes).
Technical changes. Stricter schemas for entity components and AI systems (from version 1.26.40 on), neighbor-update triggers for fence and stair block states, expanded multi-block support, and several API revisions.
What’s Coming: the Full Dappled Forest
The full autumnal forest biome, 2026’s third drop, is still early in development — its features haven’t entered formal testing beyond what’s experimental in 26.40. A fall 2026 release (possibly September) is speculated, though Mojang hasn’t confirmed an exact date yet. It also hasn’t been revealed whether the biome will get a mob of its own.
